Superbowl Spread – Saints Have Great Value

February 7th, 2010 No Comments

Superbowl 44 is only a few days away and as the big game gets closer, the Superbowl point spread seems to have locked in at -5 ½ for the favored Colts. If this seems a bit high, it is – especially considering the spread started out around four points. See the full article here.

Horse Racing – Holy Bull Stakes Attracts Fairly Unknown Field

February 6th, 2010 No Comments

I saw my first Holy Bull Stakes when it was called the Preview Stakes in the early 1990s. I especially remember the ’94 renewal when Go for Gin defeated Halo’s Image and ran the fastest time for 14 of the races staged at 1 1/16 miles – 1:41 3/5.
Holy Bull swallowed his palate and finished off the board. See the full article here.

NFL on Christmas Day – San Diego vs. Tennessee

December 24th, 2009 No Comments

NFL Pro Football Betting

San Diego Chargers (11-3 SU, 7-7 ATS) at Tennessee Titans (7-7 SU, 6-8 ATS)
Friday, December 25 – 7:30 PM ET

BetUS NFL football betting odds: TENNESSEE -3, Total 47

In the BetUS NFL football betting odds, the Titans are listed as a three-point favorite, with a posted total of 47 points.

Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

  • SD has covered five of its last seven games
  • SD has won its last nine games SU
  • SD has played four of its last six games OVER the total
  • SD has covered four of its last five road games
  • SD has won its last five road games SU
  • TENN has won seven of its last eight games SU
  • TENN has won its last five home games SU
  • SD has won and covered the last five meetings

The San Diego Chargers are at it again. The Chargers are on their annual late-season tear, winning nine straight games, and have taken command in the AFC West, which is theirs, despite the fast start of the Denver Broncos.

This kind of thing can occasionally last through the first round of the playoffs, then it stops there as San Diego fades. But as it stands now, they have won 17 straight games in the month of December and have pleased many of their football betting backers.

The Tennessee Titans have had, in their own way, a remarkable season. The Titans lost their first six games, and that included games where they rolled over against Indianapolis and Jacksonville. The nadir was a shameful, disgraceful 59-0 loss at New England, after which they made the change from Kerry Collins to Vince Young at quarterback and salvaged something out of their season.

Young has led the team to seven wins in eight games, with the only loss to the undefeated Colts, and Young has salvaged something out of his career, which appeared in the dumpster after Collins led the team to a 10-0 record to start last season. he has thrown ten TD passes, including three against the Dolphins last Sunday, with just four pickoffs. At 7-7 (6-8 ATS in the football betting odds), Tennessee is still breathing in the playoff race, and after blowing a lead to Miami last week, they came back in spirited fashion to win the game in overtime.

The difference between these running attacks is tremendous. While San Diego has the underachieving and washed-up LaDainian Tomlinson, Tennessee features Chris Johnson, who has become this year’s best running back in the NFL, with 1730 yards, 5.7 yards a carry, and nine straight games with over a hundred yards. Last week against the Dolphins he had 104, which was actually his lowest total since October 11.

There may be differences in the motivational level of these teams. San Diego has, for all intents and purposes, wrapped up the #2 seed for the AFC after beating the Bengals last week, while the Titans, even without a clear “path” to the playoffs, per se, can stay alive by winning.

Hey, if they were going to stop playing hard, they would have thrown in the towel about eight weeks ago. They didn’t. I wonder if Young’s legs might wear out this defense that has to travel to the east coast on a short week. We’re laying the points with the Titans, the three-point favorite in the BetUS NFL football betting odds.

JAY’S PLAY: TENNESSEE -3 ***

(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)

Luck of the draw!

December 16th, 2009 No Comments

Two 2012 World Cup title contenders had plenty to smile about after the draw for the Group Phase was made in Cape Town, South Africa. Defending world champion Italy is odds on favorite to win Group F after being drawn to face Paraguay, World Cup debutant Slovakia and the tournament’s crass outsider New Zealand and the Tifosi are already rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of going far again.
England, the motherland of soccer, breezed through the qualifying phase in impressive style and has been handed a favorable draw against Slovenia, the USA and Algeria. The Americans will no doubt provide a stern test, but hope are high in England that coach Fabio Capello could lead the “Three Lions” to their first title since the legendary 1966 tournament!

After two long years of qualifying the first highlight of the 2010 Soccer World Cup was completed in early December with the draw for the group phase of matches. As always, the world’s press were keen to find the toughest group line-up and were quickly of the opinion that record world champion Brazil has found itself in this tournament’s Group of Death! The Samba superstars will go toe to toe with the Ivory Coast (widely regarded as Africa’s top team), Portugal (with arguably the world most exciting player in Cristiano Ronaldo) and the unknown element posed by underdog North Korea. Are you expecting the Brazilians to show their class and win Group G?

Brett Hull to be Honored by the St. Louis Blues

December 15th, 2009 No Comments

There are snipers, goal scorers and then there are guys like Brett Hull. He may not have had the vision of Gretzky or Lemieux but he could put the puck in the net with the best of them.

He was a winner and although he never reached the pinnacle of hockey with the Blues, he did go on to win Stanley Cups with the Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings.

Tonight, the St. Louis Blues are honoring Hull for his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame last month that will include speeches from former Blues’ greats Brendan Shanahan, Curtis Joseph, Geoff Courtnall and Grant Fuhr.

The years Hull spent in St. Louis were shared with some of hockey’s greats, beyond those that are speaking tonight; the list includes Adam Oates, Wayne Gretzky, Al MacInnis and Chris Pronger.

Hull was acquired from the Calgary Flames in 1987 and promptly scored 72, 86 and 70 goals in a three-season span from 1989-90.

“We had the Babe Ruth of hockey,” Shanahan said. “Every time Babe hit, he hit a home run. Every time Brett shot it, he scored a goal.”

In a measure of irony and no doubt a reminder to Flames fans of what they gave up, he’ll be honored in a pre-game ceremony before Tuesday’s game against Calgary.

Along with the ceremony, the organization is planning to erect a Hull statue outside the Scottrade Center to join his fellow Blues brothers Al MacInnis and Bernie Federko.

This isn’t the first move St. Louis has made to honor Brett, as the team retired Hull’s No. 16 in 2006. Rightfully so as he holds franchise records for goals (527), hat tricks (27), game-winning goals (70), power-play goals (195) and shots on goal (3,367), and ranks second in assists (409), points (936) and short-handed goals (18).

“He really put St. Louis on the map for hockey,” said Keith Tkachuk, a veteran Blues forward. “The building’s going to be electric and we’re going to have to take advantage of that.”

The BetUS NHL line on the game is (-105) for Calgary while the Blues are going off at (-115).

NFL Insider – 5 Burning Questions for NFL Week 15

December 15th, 2009 No Comments

There are just three weeks left in the NFL betting season, and BetUS poses five questions for football handicappers to watch out for in Week 15…

1: How much longer can the perfect seasons continue? Until (or unless) the Saints and Colts lose a game, this will be the #1 question in the minds of everyone in the NFL. Both teams faced stiff tests in Week 14, but both ultimately got the job done like good teams do. But now, New Orleans plays host to the Cowboys, while Indy has to travel to the Jaguars. Both Dallas and Jacksonville are in dire need for victories to keep their playoff hopes alive, and with the top team in each conference essentially wrapping up home field advantage throughout the playoffs, doesn’t it just feel like a week where one, if not both teams fall?

2: Can the Titans get back into the playoff picture once and for all? Tennessee scratched and clawed back from 0-6 and is now just one game behind a host of teams at 7-6 for the final playoff spot in the AFC. A win against Miami would finally get the Titans back to .500, but the Dolphins are playing some of the best ball in the entire NFL and could also put this team out of its misery with a ‘W’ as well. Perhaps the better question about this game: What will RB Chris Johnson do next? He picked up three more TDs against the Rams on Sunday and now has seven TDs of at least 50 yards this year.

Get in on the action now bet on NFL > > SIGN UP HERE

3: Will the Patriots’ road woes continue? Remember, this is a team that hasn’t won a legitimate road game this season! Now New England has to face the media about WR Randy Moss and whether he has quit on his team or not just in time to head to Ralph Wilson Stadium to tango with a Buffalo squad that is playing strong football under interim HC Perry Fewell. Things could get mighty interesting should the Fins and/or Jets win and New England loses on Sunday.

4: Who will capture the #2 seed in the AFC? In Week 14, the Bengals looked like a team that was far more interested in its trip to Qualcomm Stadium than its current task at hand, while the Chargers looked great, handing the Cowboys a crippling loss. If San Diego wins on Sunday, it’ll lock up the #2 seed in the AFC. If Cincinnati gets the job done, it’ll know that two more wins will give it a very improbable first round bye.

5: Will a swarm of locusts open up over Arrowhead Stadium? What else could possibly happen when the Browns face off with the Chiefs on Sunday? How on earth does CBS preview this game? “Quinn! Cassel! It’s the NFL on CBS!” Or should the network try this one? “It’s a battle for the #3 pick in the NFL Draft! Don’t miss it!” Or this? “Former Patriots duke it out where the loser loses his job! It’s Mangini versus Pioli at Arrowhead Stadium and its up next!”
